This product is just the right tool for the job. I have always used a cake tester like this one. I misplaced the one I had and could not find one locally.
I saw this one on Amazon and ordered it. Works well.

Purchased this for my wife as a gift. She likes it, she says that it's better that a toothpick, because it is longer ,so you can test a thicker cake than a toothpick can reach. Basically, if it comes out clean-the cake is done. I have no problem purchasing gadgets for my wife that work-and this is one of them.
